too many questions. but with ref to antivirus programs i would say this.
1. use NOD32. it is the best of the bunch, for several reasons.
2. you need one program only – to use more would cause far more problems than it would solve
3. most definitely run the program in the background. it would be madness to just run them every couple of days.
